Our Guide to Feel More Energetic
How to Feel More Energetic
Are you feeling lethargic, struggling to get out of bed in the morning and generally feeling unfocused? Well, you’re not alone.
Unsurprisingly, our stressful office jobs, less than ideal nutrition, excessive use of technology and sleep habits, combined with the pressure of appearing to have your life together for social media, are taking their toll on our bodies, leaving us constantly fatigued.
For a pick me up, many of us may turn to caffeine or when 3.30-itis hits, it might be a chocolate bar, but there are other strategies you can implement to improve your energy levels and make it through each day.
Tip 1 – Get Moving
If you’re feeling tired and sluggish, we know it sounds crazy to throw on your workout gear and exercise – but you’ll have to trust us. Get those endorphins pumping with a short walk or put your headphones on and get to the gym.
Regular exercise helps to boost your energy levels in a few ways.
- It increases endorphin levels – Endorphins are chemicals produced by your body that react with your brain. As well as reducing your perception of pain, endorphins trigger a positive, somewhat euphoric feeling often referred to as a “runner’s high” – which can help to reduce stress, anxiety and depression, leading to a more energised and positive outlook on life.
- Improves your overall health – By improving your overall health through exercise, you will find it easier to complete daily tasks, feeling less lethargic after a job is done. Moderate exercise also helps to lower cholesterol and blood pressure too!
- Improves Sleep Quality – When you increase your physical activity, you will often find you spend more time asleep and more time in a deep sleep. Stages 3 & 4 are considered to be the deep sleep phases, where your body repairs, restores and rejuvenates itself.
Tip 2 – Take More Notice of What You’re Eating and Drinking
We’re going to sound like your parents for one second, so bare with us: Do you drink enough water and eat enough of each macro and micronutrient to keep your body fuelled and working properly? Alright, maybe they aren’t asking you specifically about your macro and micronutrients…you get the idea!
Your body is at least 60% water and in order for your bodily functions to work correctly, ultimately keeping your body energised, you need to guzzle at least two litres of water per day!
When it comes to diet, you should be consuming fresh, whole foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals; these foods will keep you fuller for longer and fulfil your body’s nutritional needs.
While they may be convenient, it is better to steer clear of pre-prepared microwave meals, processed foods and fast foods, which often lack nutritional value and contain high levels of added sugar, preservatives and fat.
Maintaining a balanced diet by eating the right number of calories and macros for your body is one way to feel more energetic, as you will be fuelling your body with the right foods rather than enjoying a short-lived carb or sugar high.
Tip 3 – Limit Your Phone and Technology Use Later in the Day
Easier said than done, right? Most of us have our phone; tablet; laptop or computer either glued to our hands or within arms reach at most points during the day because admittedly, our lives depend on technology.
A 2014 survey conducted by the National Sleep Foundation in America found that 95% of people reported using an electronic device within an hour of bedtime! Research has shown a distinct link between using technology before bed and an interrupted sleep, with the light from the screen shown to affect melatonin levels in the brain and the stimulating effect of interacting with your phone keeping your brain alert.
As mentioned above, a good night of sleep and getting into a “deep sleep” is integral to ensuring your body can restore itself. Other than a bad night of sleep leading to you feeling exhausted the next day, poor sleep has also been linked to impaired immunity, weight gain and even depression.
So make an effort to put down your phone at night, stop scrolling through social media and playing games on your phone at least an hour before you plan to fall asleep.
