7 Steps to Clearer Skin
We all want to look and feel our best, and for many of us, that starts with the condition of our skin. We can’t halt the passage of time and prevent ourselves from growing older, but we can slow down the ill-effects of ageing on our skin. Growing older can take its toll on the skin, as it loses its elasticity and firmness which can result in lines, wrinkles, and loose and saggy skin. As well as ageing, unhealthy lifestyle and dietary choices can also take their toll on your appearance. If you want clearer, healthier skin, here are 6 useful tips to follow.
1. Follow a healthy diet
One of the simplest and most effective ways of keeping the skin firm, youthful looking, and healthy, is by following a healthy diet. People who eat large amounts of junk food find that their skin is greasy, it’s pale, they get spots and blemishes, and it loses its firmness. On the flip-side, those that follow a healthy diet packed full of vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, and antioxidants, find that the skin looks great. These nutrients help to keep the skin cells healthy, they fight and prevent inflammation, they help to boost collagen production, and they even give you a healthy glow which gives you the equivalent of a tan, without actually getting in the sun.
2. Avoid too much sun
On the subject of the sun, another way of helping to keep the skin healthy and vibrant is to avoid spending too much time in the sun. A bit of a tan can make you look healthy, but too much sun is notoriously bad for the skin. UV rays from the skin can cause sun spots, it can cause the skin to become loose and wrinkled, and it can dry it out so that it resembles cracked leather.
Another very useful tip when it comes to looking after your skin, is to exfoliate regularly. Exfoliating helps to gently remove dead skin and dead skin cells which can then promote the growth and regeneration of new and healthy skin cells instead. Exfoliating helps to remove dry skin, so it leaves the skin smoother and helps your pores to breathe.
4. Lead a healthy lifestyle
Not only should you eat healthily, you should also try to lead a healthy lifestyle if you want to keep your skin healthy. Don’t smoke, as smoking dries the skin out, it’s full of chemicals that damage the skin, it stains the skin yellow, and it causes it to look older and more wrinkled than it actually is. Excessive alcohol consumption can also damage the skin as it can promote inflammation which damages the skin cells. However, some studies have revealed that 1 small glass of red wine can be beneficial for the skin, and the bodies, as red wine contains resveratrol and other antioxidants that keep the cells healthy and prevent inflammation.
If you’re dehydrated, your skin looks dull, lifeless, and pale. It becomes dry, and it just feels unhealthy and unattractive. Drinking plenty of water helps to plump up the skin cells, it helps to boost collagen and elastin production, and it keeps the skin cells healthy and functioning as they should. Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water per day.
6. Try to avoid stress
In today’s climate, being told to avoid stress is like being told to avoid breathing in oxygen. Stress is unavoidable for many of us, but excessive stress can literally be fatal as it can lead to all manner of health issues. In terms of the skin, avoiding stress is very important if you want your skin to look its best. Stress promotes an increase in a hormone known as cortisol. This stress hormone can suppress the immune system and cause acne breakouts, blemishes, and a variety of other skin problems. Whenever possible, try to avoid stress and relax as much as you can.
